We partnered with HSBC, one of the world's largest banking and financial services organisations, to direct the corporate branding strategy, public relations narrative, and deployment of their "Roaring with Pride" inclusion campaign. Centred around replacing the iconic bronze lion statues outside the Hong Kong headquarters with rainbow-painted replicas, the initiative aimed to position HSBC as a courageous, progressive employer while driving awareness for their global Pride network—which spans 15,000 employees across 24 countries.
Summary
Monsoon Stone Marketing directed the multi-market public relations narrative and corporate communications strategy for HSBC’s landmark "Roaring with Pride" global inclusion campaign.
Centred around replacing the iconic bronze lion statues outside the bank's Hong Kong headquarters with rainbow-painted replicas, the initiative aimed to showcase the institution's progressive values and celebrate its global Pride network of 15,000 employees.
Faced with immediate cultural backlash and a local petition of over 4,500 opposing signatures, our team implemented a resilient "Stand Firm" PR playbook that successfully protected corporate reputation and maintained the activation throughout its planned timeline.
To combat deep-rooted internal skepticism, we synchronised public marketing campaigns directly with measurable workplace policy upgrades—such as same-sex partner employee benefits and gender change procedures across international hubs—while driving high-impact, human-centric storytelling that significantly boosted internal recruitment and global employer brand equity.
Challenge
Navigating Severe Cultural Backlash: Launching an overt LGBTQ+ campaign in a highly conservative market like Hong Kong generated immediate institutional friction. Over 4,500 people signed an active petition accusing the bank of trampling on traditional family values, presenting a critical threat to corporate reputation and local market share.
Overcoming Internal Employee Exhaustion: Employees in restrictive global markets reported feeling forced to hide their sexual orientation at work due to fears of professional discrimination. The campaign had to break through deep-rooted internal skepticism and prove that the bank's corporate inclusion policies were safe, authentic, and structural—not just superficial marketing tokenism.
Managing Fragmented Legal Landscapes: Because HSBC operates across vastly different legal jurisdictions, marketing global inclusivity required extreme care. The messaging framework had to stay unified while dynamically adjusting to markets with no workplace discrimination protections or legal recognitions for same-sex couples.
Transforming Monolithic Financial Branding: Traditional banking marketing relies heavily on a clinical, ultra-conservative aesthetic. Introducing a bold, high-contrast rainbow visual language onto a globally recognised, historic building threatened to clash with established brand guidelines if not executed with absolute prestige.
Solutions
Deploying the "Stand Firm" PR Playbook: Instead of capitulating to public petitions, we recommended a resilient brand stance. We framed the rainbow lions not as a political statement, but as a direct reflection of core corporate values. By controlling the media narrative and keeping the statues proudly displayed throughout the planned duration, we successfully converted a public relations crisis into a masterclass in corporate integrity.
Amplifying Real Employee Voices: We bypassed corporate scriptwriting and built the entire marketing narrative around authentic, human-centric storytelling. By launching the "I Can Be My True Self Here" campaign series, we spotlighted real employee journeys—ranging from clandestine underground organisational meetings to celebratory same-sex weddings—instantly humanising the bank and driving up internal recruitment metrics.
Developing a Phased, Policy-Backed Timeline: To ensure the campaign carried authentic weight, we synchronised public-facing marketing directly with localised policy rollouts. Every major creative asset drop was tied directly to a tangible workplace upgrade—such as introducing life insurance extensions in Hong Kong or gender change procedures in Mexico—proving the brand's measurable social commitment.
Integrating Inclusion into Premium Asset Touchpoints: We unified the bold rainbow aesthetic with high-end financial styling. By lighting up the global headquarters in corporate-engineered rainbow spectrums and rolling out premium retail details like pronoun badges for branch employees, we successfully modernised the bank's visual identity while preserving its prestige market position.
